The Centre For Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) is a research centre based at Durham University unique in that it provides indicator systems that are confidential to schools and colleges and is the home of Alis, Yellis, MidYIS and PIPS. The CEM Centre is the world pioneer in Value-Added analysis systems, being founded in 1983. Alis (the post-16 monitoring system) was the world's first VA system and is currently used annually by in excess of 1600 institutions and covers over 50% of all A-level results in the UK.

Dr Kevin Conway pioneered a value added system (ALPS) while Principal of Greenhead College. ALPS is now used in over 570 schools and colleges across the country.
